Reading with a Slide Show at Copperfield's!

I'll be at Copperfield's Books in Santa Rosa tomorrow night, presenting a slide show based on my new book, Swimming in the Steno Pool: A Retro Guide to Making It in the Office. I know Santa Rosa is a long haul on a Friday night, but this is one of only two currently scheduled Northern California events (the other is on May 19 at the Capitola Book Cafe), so if you can make it, I'd love to see you there!

Blasting Off with IO9

Today is the launch of a new Gawker blog I'm writing for called IO9. It's devoted to sci-fi and futurism and edited by the fabulous Annalee Newitz. It's a really cool site - even for the non-SF inclined, like me. Yep, that's right, I'm not a big SF fan - but I'm intensely curious about it, since I have so many friends who are. Writing for IO9 is an opportunity for me to explore the genre (not to mention get disciplined about daily posting, ahem).

I'll be posting about retro futurism and LOST, both of which I love.
Check it out, and please don't forget to comment.

A brilliant cartoon from Mimi Pond

My friend Mimi Pond recently had one of her cartoons appear in animated form on Slate TV. I've been a huge fan of her work for many years and it was such a treat to see it animated. Plus, anybody who's been in a bad relationship (I guess that's probably all of us at one time or another) should be able to relate.

Taking Things Seriously

Today I got my contributor's copy of Taking Things Seriously: 75 Objects With Unexpected Significance, by Joshua Glen & Carol Hayes. It's a collection of essays about and photographs of objects imbued with personal meaning by their owners: a stick chewed by beavers, a tiny little pinecone, a box of nail clippings. The items are tangible yet mysterious, and the book itself is absolutely gorgeous. I'm so happy to have been part of this project.

P.S. My contribution is a scrapbook. It's on page 154.
